Regional variations in pronunciation, vocabulary, and expressions - most notably the "hard" (Kandahari/southern Afghan) and "soft" (Peshawari/Pakistani) dialect families. Our blog post "Pakistani vs Afghan Pashto: What's the Real Difference?" covers the full comparison.
Mainly accent and some vocabulary - sounds like ښ and ږ shift between the two, and each side has picked up different loanwords (Urdu/English vs Dari/Persian). Grammar stays the same either way.
So you're not caught off guard the first time you talk to someone from the "other" region - Module 2 and 3 build recognition of both before Module 4 compares them directly.
It's built for learners who already have basic Pashto - Module 1 (Dialect Foundations) assumes you can already follow simple conversation, unlike Pashto Beginner Course.
Yes - understanding both accents by ear is the whole focus of Module 5 (Real Conversation Integration).
Yes. Module 2 covers Pakistani (Peshawari-style) features and Module 3 covers Afghan (Kandahari-style) features before Module 4 puts them side by side.
Yes - the accent differences (particularly the ښ/ژ/ږ sounds covered in our dialects guide) are a core focus across Modules 2 and 3.
Yes - if you'll be speaking with people from both Pakistan and Afghanistan, this course is built specifically for that situation rather than committing to one dialect only.
Yes. Module 4 (Comparative Understanding) covers region-specific vocabulary and expressions side by side.
Yes - professionals working across both Pakistani and Afghan Pashto-speaking regions benefit from Module 6's focus on adapting speech to the listener.
Yes - Module 5 uses dialect-based conversations and dialogues rather than only comparing vocabulary lists.
That's the specific goal of Module 6 (Fluency & Adaptation) - training you to adjust your speech depending on who you're talking to.
Yes, within the dialect-awareness context - it builds on existing Pashto ability rather than teaching fluency from zero, which the Beginner or Advanced courses cover.
